2009 - SheVaCon, Roanoke VA

This was my first trip to Shevacon. It's a smaller and more informal
convention, based more around fan groups and fan activities than the more
commercial aspects of other cons.
The droid builders group is well respected at Shevacon, and we were treated
very well. I worked very hard during January and February to have my droid
on his feet for this convention, and it really paid off!
I had two semi-significant problems arise with the droid. Upon unloading him
from the truck, one of the legs started separating at the shoulder. Luckily I
thought ahead far enough to bring a hand-truck and a drill, but not so far
as to bring screws and PVC cement, so the local Lowes down in Roanoke came in
very handy. With about 1.5 to 2 hours of work,
R2-T0 was up on his feet for
Friday evening. Being that I was the first to arrive from our group, I got
all of the droid-related attention and we were well received.
The second incident was before heading out to dinner on Saturday. A taped-down
cable on the floor tripped my droid. I had gotten stuck on it once earlier
in the day, and another time earlier in the day I went right over it with no
problems. This time, I gunned the throttle too much, and the shoulders had
loosened a little over the course of the day (it happens), and the front foot
caught, and he did a face-plant. There was damage, but it's not severe. Some
hot-glue and he was back together, though I'll be replacing a few cracked pastic
parts eventually.
Other than that, we had a great time, and we were so busy that I never really
got out to see the rest of the convention. Especially with all of the
R2-KT work being done on Saturday, and none
of us stayed long on Sunday.
